What we do:
To achieve our goal, greenlight is actively engaged in a range of initiatives that attempt to connect with and educate community members, as well as reduce or eliminate the waste generated by our college.
Current Initiatives:
- Annual Sustainable Design Charrette; Fall-Spring 2008-2009 Brave New Workshop
- Collaboration with engineering departments for the DOE’s Solar Decathalon design + build competition
- CDes Environmentally Friendly Purchasing Resource Book
- Educational Campaign
- Studio Material Collection and Reuse
- Organics Collection in Rapson Hall
- Reuse Sketchbooks
- Green Business Tours
- Monthly tours of local businesses, building projects or infrastructural hubs to educate students about real world ecological solutions or identify areas of concern.
Future Initiatives:
- May Term Student designed Rainwater Garden for Rapson east courtyard
- Develop “eco-blog” to foster an exchange of information and provide networking/ partnership opportunities with external organizations such as Emerging Green Builders, Hennepin County, Green Institute, and the University of Minnesota
Past Initiatives:
- Sustainable Design Charrette; Spring 2008 Hennepin County energy from waste incineration site
- In-school educational outreach programs teaching eco-footprints and other sustainable metrics for buildings + society
- Coordination with faculty and administration within the College of Design on environmental preferable purchasing, infrastructure + furnishings
