Awareness
The Awareness Campaign began as a method of informing students and teachers about the consumption of resources at CDES (formerly CALA). The Campaign started after our annual workshop in 2005 called, “Greening CALA.” When the participants learned about the amount of resources consumed within the school, they wanted to share this information with other students and faculty.
The Awareness Campaign seeks to highlight some of the areas in which we can make improvements by simply changing our behavior. Students and faculty are reminded to, “Flick ‘em off,” or turn off the lights when leaving a room. By creatively raising awareness of everyday consumption problems, we begin to look at our habits a bit differently.
Greenlight has received attention for the work we are doing, from new students to the president of the University of Minnesota, and from local architects to developers outside the U.S. We realize that students are the professionals of tomorrow; and if we are to create positive change, then what better way than to encourage sustainable practice and living here at the University. Our hope is that in gaining the attention of those around us we will become leaders in promoting a more sustainable future.
